Do I really Need Electrician's Scissors for doing Terminations?

T he answer is no but in the same comparison do you really need a pair of running shoes to run a marathon or could you get by with a pair of loafers? Even though you could run the marathon with regular loafers, you would be a fool to do so because they would slow you down and cause you pain. Your position in the race would suffer greatly.

S imilarly when you use a diagonal cutting plier to prepare the eight conductors for insertion into the RJ-45 connector, the ends of the wire will be squeezed as they are being cut. This would cause the cut ends to become oval shaped and not round. This method of cutting makes it difficult to get a perfectly square and straight cut. So on the lesser part, it will take longer to insert the eight conductors into the plug but on the more critical part, you may find that not all eight conductors made it all of the way to the end of the plug causing them to not make a connection to the pin(s). This would cause you to cut off the connector, throw it in the garbage, and start all over again. Also, if you used a regular pair of paper or fabric scissors, you would have trouble caused by the conductors slipping back (due to a lack of blade serrations). In addition, because the standard paper cutting scissor is not made for cutting wire, it would become dull very quickly.

Those who do a lot of RJ-45 terminations every day realize the importance of a good pair of Electrician's Scissors. At the end of the day, they find that they did more terminations and have a greater yeild because of their amazing scissors that are right for the job!

Wires still relevant at the network edge

Ethernet infrastructure built on CAT 5 and CAT 6 infrastructure, patch cables and other wired infrastructure is still relevant in many settings, despite the widespread use of wireless-enabled devices, according to a recent Network World report.

The news source cited a study from Meraki to point out that many business networks are seeing more wireless devices connecting to infrastructure than wired ones. However, this does not indicate the end of wired infrastructure.

While the need for wireless is clear, many experts agree that cable-based architectures are necessary to meet the speed, bandwidth, quality of service, security and reliability needs of many users, according to the report.

This is creating an environment where Layer 2 and 3 ports are still experiencing solid sales, according to In-Stat, and wired infrastructure is continuing to thrive despite the popularity of convenient wireless infrastructure, the news source said.

A recent project by the U.S. Department of Energy is a clear indicator of wired networking's potential, according to another Network World report. The DOE is close to unveiling 100 G Ethernet systems that will allow scientists to create real-life simulations in scientific fields including particle physics, astronomy and climate change.
