Trying to decide between a shielded and unshielded cabling solution for Cat 6A? Check out this article ...

High performance networks are increasingly pushing the boundaries toward 10 Gbps speeds, making cabling decisions incredibly important for businesses. In many cases, this process forces organizations to balance out the different advantages and disadvantages of shielded cabling solutions compared to unshielded models.
A recent article from The Data Center Journal explained that unshielded cabling can get the job done in 10 Gbps environments, but only if the network is configured with incredible precision. However, we disagree with that because even a small level of infiltrated crosstalk can cause complete network disruption  which will be explained in greater detail later in this article Read More >>

QUESTION:

I plan to buy a 6 strand Pre-Terminated fiber optic assembly from LANshack to pull underground between two buildings and I want to know the thickness of the Pulling Basket (pulling eye) so that I can determine the size of the conduit that we will install.

ANSWER:

The thickness of the pulling basket is approximately ¾" but you would not want to use that measurement to determine a conduit size. It is crucial that you design the conduit for minimum drag for the pull. So that means as few bends as possible with the largest radiuses. Larger conduits have bigger radius bends by default. We recommend that underground conduits, if newly installed, should be a minimum size of between 1.5" to 2". If the run is long, or if you anticipate the possibility of additional future pulls, then you may want to install a conduit of up to 4" (or greater). Once the trench is dug, the installation of the conduit is comparably easy and inexpensive. You may also want to consider installing additional conduits for future use.
