Connector reflections temporarily “blind” OTDRs, creating a "dead-zone" where they can't detect anomalies. OTDR launch cables (or dead-zone boxes) at near-end patch panels help the OTDR recover and measure relative loss at both patch panels. Without a long enough launch cable, near-end reflection is undetectable, and without a dead-zone box, the OTDR can’t measure far-end loss. A 1 km launch cable suffices for most fiber links, though longer cables may be needed for long-haul links.
