The amount of distance that the cable need to be ran typically determines what type of cable / fiber they need. For instance, under 250 feet you could use a regular Cat 6 (copper cable), but for a distance over 250 feet fiber optic cabling is recommended. After that, the amount of distance is considered to determine what fiber core to choose. OM1 is the biggest fiber core for multimode and is also know as 65.2/125 which is the size of the core. So the size of that glass is larger than the others, therefore the light is bouncing around and doesn't get to the end point as fast. OM2 / OM3 / OM4/ and OM5 are all types of Multimode fiber also known as 50/125. The core gets smaller with OM5 being the smallest, giving less time for that light to bounce around and achieves a faster speed. *NOTE - OM2 is not manufactured as much any more and is not recommended - we usually do a free upgrade to OM3.
In fiber you need 1 pair or 2 strands for each connection. So a 2 strand assembly would go from point to point and establish one connection. It is best practice to have a spare in case anything ever happens to the fiber, or for future expansion. The most popular choice is the 6 strand assembly which give the customers three pairs - 1 that they will be using right away and 2 spares. **The reason is that we are using the 6 strand material to make the 4 strand, so the price difference is not much.
What's the difference? Micro Armor is super thin and light weight. It uses a stainless steel spiraling technology which makes it similar in size to a non-armored fiber. But it is one of our more expensive options. The Interlock Armor is a heavier bulkier material made out of Aluminum armor. Both options offer superior protection - we recommend the Micro Armor.
